Wirral Matters – Spring 2026

News and views from The Wirral Society an environmental watchdog group since 1928

What’s inside this issue

This Spring 2026 edition of Wirral Matters focuses strongly on the growing pressures on the Wirral’s Green Belt and wider environment. It looks at a number of current and proposed developments, including the controversial Peak Cluster carbon capture pipeline, solar farm proposals on farmland (Thurstaston), and renewed attempts to build on protected land around Hooton. The Society sets out its concerns about national planning policy – particularly the use of “grey belt” land – and the impact on countryside and farmland.

Alongside these major planning issues, the newsletter reports on local developments and conservation efforts: from regeneration projects at Wirral Waters, New Ferry and the former Stirrup site (Arrowe Park), to concerns about neglected sites, intrusive advertising signage, and the condition of historic buildings. It also reports on some positive outcomes, such as the restoration of the Jellicoe water feature (at Moreton) and well-received housing schemes.
